The Sacraments of the Catholic Church
Guided by the Holy Spirit, the Church recognizes the existence of Seven Sacraments instituted by the Lord.*
Baptism
1st Sacrament of Chistian Initiation
Baptism is the gateway to the other sacraments, by which the Holy Spirit moves us to answer Christ’s call to holiness.
Holy Communion
2nd Sacrament of Chistian Initiation
The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Faith. As Catholics, we have the great blessing to receive our Lord, Jesus Christ whenever we celebrate Holy Mass.
Confirmation
3rd Sacrament of Christian Initiation
Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world.
Reconciliation
A Sacrament of Healing
The Sacrament of Penance frees us from our sins but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us.
Matrimony
A Sacrament of Communion & Mission
The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which expresses a permanent union of a husband and wife capable of knowing and loving each other and God.
Anointing of the Sick
A Sacrament of Healing
When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God’s will, the person be physically healed of illness.
*Not shown here is the Sacrament of Holy Orders. For more information about this sacrament, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1536-1600.
